[He is staring at Shadow in absolute horror. GOOD SIR WHAT ARE YOU DOING?]

[Listen, no amount of taking stock of all that can counter Shadow just straight up eating coffee beans.]

You're excused. [He stares at Sonic, waiting for him to say whatever is on his mind.]

When I first tried coffee, it was with Maria. She found it but didn't know how to make it into a drink. So we ate it together. I've eaten it ever since.

[Shadow takes a spoonful of coffee and eats it. Crunch. Crunch. Crunch.]

But they were on a military base and tv has taught me their coffee is always terrible so I can't count on that.

[Groans.] I'll bear through it. He needs the positive affirmations, I can bear through it!

[A pause, lowers his hands.] That is also a thing I need to talk to you about later.

[Then he looks at Nine.] What's your favorite thing about Ellipsa?

I really don't see the problem. It's not poison and if it can be made a drink eating it should be fine.

[Nine slides Sonic a cup of tea. He poured it while they were talking and just waited for them to finish.

The question gives him a bit of pause.]

It's peaceful more than it's not, I got to make my own house, and we're actually making progress against the darkness.

[One of those is an actual thing. Probably.]

I cannot believe I am the only one normal about food in here, I have eaten worms for a month before. [Don't worry about that comment.]

[He shakes his head.]

And peaceful is good, but you can make the tails, which I'm sure it a lot harder than putting together a house, so that could be done anywhere. And fighting an evil isn't really a reason to love a place unless you're a thrill seeker, but its kind of eh. [Handwaggles.] Like okay, its peaceful! What do you get to enjoy about the peace?

Well worms didn't exist in the world I came from, or the one I moved to. But frankly I think a length of meat slathered in more meat, sauce, and beans is pretty unappetizing so...

[He shrugs.]

The peace lets me finally focus on making a home. That's why I value it. And the more progress we make, the more I can be certain this is home. It's pretty simple.

Also, the meat on meat with beans is way more tasty, way less squirmy, and also a whooooole lot more filling. Plus other toppings!

Plus you can describe a lot of food and make it sound bad, but at least most of it isn't alive.

[He's kicking his legs, studying Tails. His head tilting more as he studies him.]

That is pretty true. Lot easier to make home feel like home when things weren't scary.

[He hums and looks at Shadow.]

I'm good with the defenses. Not there for location yet. [He looks to Nine.] Think you can give us stuff we can set up on our own?

Less alien and more alternate. Especially since alien is relative.

[Nine studies him right back. This Sonic would probably be both horrified and love that little ball of fur and fangs, Mangey.]

I have no intention of ever trying that for comparison. But I don't doubt that.

And I could easily do that, though I don't make a habit of doing work for free.

[Sonic has two points in his favor, being that he's a Sonic and that Shadow clearly vouches for him...but he's not going to just say so.]

Understandable. We want to keep the emerald safe. What would you charge for building something that a limited number of people could have access to?

Sonic said he's from Earth. I wasn't born on Earth. Only humans born on Earth as far as I know back home. So its weird he isn't an alien on Earth, but I am, so at least someone else isn't from Earth, so at least there is some weird thing going on with birthplaces.

Because like Earth has worms. I don't think there wouldn't be worms? They do a bunch of plant stuff. Pretty sure it'd be real different if worms didn't exist.

I also don't recommend them. Worst kind of noodles.

Fair. We can figure out a payment thing. Shadow was just recommending you and the tails are impressive, don't see a lot of robotics that move that well, so anything that's hard to get into, limit who can get into, and can like...block energy signatures probably? I think it is probably just hard to track in general, Knuckles and Tails hasn't mentioned that's a possibility for us to be concerned about, but it doesn't hurt to be extra extra sure.

The only animal I've seen in New Yoke is a single Flicky. Nature wasn't really the Chaos Council's thing. Can't say I've heard of Earth outside of from Shadow though.

Technically, everyone here is an alien. And from our perspectives anyone different from what we're used to is one too. So technically you weren't alone in that as soon as you arrive.

[He's definitely not purposely avoiding attempts to connect at the moment.

Though he's not surprised this Sonic also has a Tails. It seems to be a throughline. If a universe has a Sonic there will be a Knuckles and a Tails, among others.

But more important business is going on.]

I want permission to study it. Not to keep, or even to house it here. I have an interest in energy sources like these. [He gestures to both emeralds.] And I've been looking into both how they interact and if they can assist in our goal here, on top of my personal interest.

If you want, you can get Shadow's input on that before agreeing to it. And there's also MK, who is helping me with that as well. And Lycaon. He's not only my roommate, I'm his maintenance more or less exclusively even though there are several people at least close to my experience level here.

But in exchange, I'll secure it for you, perform maintenance to upkeep security, and provide you and anyone you trust the means to know immediately if it's being accessed by anyone with and without your permission.

[Of course Nine is interested in studying it. Why wouldn't he be? Nine likes power. It isn't anything new and he does know how to wield it. So long as they don't push him into a corner or betray his trust, things will go smoothly. Shadow is sure of it. He nods and looks to Sonic.]

I am fine with you continuing to study my emerald. I will leave the decision of the Master Emerald to Sonic. What do you think? Are those terms you are comfortable with?

I mean, yeah, but I meant home experiences. You know, just trying to figure out the differences. Like Big Blue and I are real different and this Shadow is different from mine and like I get some of why it is and why it isn't, but also the fact he's not even two years older than me, but has such a different vibe? Its all interesting, very sci fi. [That is a definite ramble.]

[Of course, then that question is brought up and he frowns. And for how chatty he's been, he's now quiet, looking off to the side. Bouncing his foot, at a rather rapid pace as he thinks it over.]

I don't think I can.

There's a promise between me, Knuckles, and Tails, and I've already tested Knuckles forgiveness for what I thought was the 'only choice' before. Ends justify the means is a dangerous road and I need....

I need more certainty if I'm going to risk their trust.

[He's now tapping at his elbow, another rapid motion, not looking at Nine, eyes flicking about as he's doing a lot of mental math.]

The trick about the Master Emerald is it doesn't work....the same for everyone. Best utilization is...is dependent on how it works with a person and....I can get you a means to study that without....the Emerald. That I can do. That isn't breaking any promise, that doesn't risk the Emerald, and I...

I can take that risk. Yeah, that should be fine. Its fine. Totally fine, Shadow trusts him and he's kind, it should be fine, its okay, its important, you can do this. [He had gotten quieter and that is....that is definitely talking to himself more than them as he's convincing himself.]

[There is also a mist kicking up around his feet.]

[His eyes finally snap to Nine.] Yeah, yeah, I can get you something to study that might tell you about power sources and utilization, I can do that.

[Honestly, it's more impressive that Sonic is being that cautious, even if it's also disappointing.]

Like I said, I'm not forcing an immediate decision. But you should think about it because at the end of the day you're asking me to create a means to secure a power I don't understand.

In the meantime though, what's your offer?
