Shadow?

Are you around? Are you still here?

Good, I just got back. We need to talk.

Sure. Where?

[Shadow doesn't respond. Nine doesn't have to wait long though. There is a knock on his door less than fifteen minutes later.]

[Nine answers the door, looking somber and motioning him inside. He lacks some of the cool, aloofness. But he still notes that Shadow looks more off than he feel shaken.]

[Shadow's eyes lack that usual intensity. They're unfocused. He walks in and just stands there for a moment. Then he sits down on the couch.]

Why?

[That tells him what he needs to know. Nine walks into the middle of the room and sits on the couch.]

I've been wracking my brain to figure out the same thing. I have the start of some theories, but no clear answer.

You didn't cause it.

[Shadow knows that much. He is sure of it.] I moved the prism. I hid it from the Doctor. Then something happened. Something...appeared. And then everything was deleted. Torn apart faster than the decay.

Everything was reset nearly to the point before every shatterspace collapsed. Everything is gone now. And it looked like it started at Green Hill.

Whatever that thing was destroyed our world. All our worlds. There's nothing left. All of it was for nothing.

Then I guess...this is home now. Because there's nowhere else to go.

...is there anything you'll need from me?

What I need you can't give. [Shadow sighs and shakes his head.]

If you discover what caused it, I want to know.

Alright. I will.

[He looks down at his hands, thumbs fidgeting.]

And let me know if that changes. I...

[He sighs. The bandage needs to be ripped off, even if it isn't the best time.]

I was able to bring the Grim shard here, just before I was sent back. It will be limited, but I may be able to produce things to help as you need.

[That gets Shadow's attention. He stares at Nine for a moment. A long moment.]

Don't go overboard. That's all. For now.

My judgement's not clouded by pain anymore. There's no reason for me to go overboard.

[He's not being defensive, it's a simple assurance. There's nothing to be gained, and the little faith he had was restored before it all ended. He's safe.]

[Shadow nods. He reaches into his quills and pulls out a green emerald.]

I also returned with this. A chaos emerald. Perhaps it can be made useful as well.

[Nine leans in, his interest piqued as he studies the emerald. It's far less rough than a prism shard, or even the completed prism. He reaches out, then looks at Shadow.]

May I study this sometime?

Sure. Just give it back when you're done.

[He puts it in Nine's hand.]

[The action takes him by surprise, and he doesn't bother hiding it.]

I didn't mean immediately...are you sure?

[He shrugs. His usual guarded personality has not yet returned. He knows Nine won't do anything too drastic. Right now, even with it being the only other thing left from Green Hills, he can't be bothered with trying to be protective of it.]

You can look at it. You can give it back. Keep it for study for a while. Do what you want.

[Nine nods, noting that Shadow clearly took the destruction of their universe harder than he did. But then, maybe he hasn't yet due to having no attachments left there that he could be around and no currently realistic goals. Maybe he hasn't processed...doesn't matter. He can be useful]
